What this covers

An Importer Exporter Code is issued by the DGFT and is mandatory for any business importing or exporting goods, and for exporters of services claiming benefits under foreign trade policy. Customs will not clear a shipment without it and banks will not process a foreign remittance against trade.

The code is permanent and PAN-based, but it now has to be updated on the DGFT portal every year between April and June — even when nothing has changed. Failure to update deactivates it, usually discovered at the worst possible moment.

We file the application, get the code, and handle the annual update.

How we handle it

Issued in days

Aadhaar or DSC-based filing on the DGFT portal, with the certificate available for download once approved.

Bank details validated

The account on the IEC has to match the one receiving export proceeds. Mismatches stall remittances.

Annual update tracked

The April–June confirmation is calendared so your code does not deactivate silently.

Filed with your LUT

For exporters, the IEC and GST LUT are set up together so you can invoice without IGST from the first shipment.

Frequently asked

Do service exporters need an IEC?
Not for the export of services itself, but yes if you want to claim benefits under the foreign trade policy or if your bank requires it for remittance documentation. Many service exporters take it for that reason alone.
Does an IEC expire?
The code is permanent, but it must be confirmed or updated on the DGFT portal every year between April and June. An un-updated IEC is deactivated and has to be reactivated before you can clear a shipment.
One IEC per business or per branch?
One IEC per PAN. Branches and additional addresses are added to the same code as modifications.
