What this covers

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is mandatory for anyone who deducts or collects tax at source. It has to be quoted on every challan, return and TDS certificate — you cannot deposit TDS without it.

Most businesses need one the moment they hire salaried staff or start paying contractors and professionals above the threshold.

We file Form 49B, get the TAN allotted and register it on TRACES so the first quarter's return does not stall on an unregistered account.

How we handle it

Applied before the first deduction

Applying after you have already deducted leaves you unable to deposit on time, with interest running.

TRACES registration included

TAN allotment alone is not enough — TRACES registration is what lets you file, correct and download certificates.

Correct jurisdiction

The assessing officer code is chosen for your actual location, which matters when a default or notice arises.

Documents you will need

  • PAN of the entity or the deductor
  • Certificate of incorporation, partnership deed or registration proof
  • Address proof of the place of business
  • Details and contact information of the authorised signatory

The process

  1. 1Confirm deductor category and jurisdiction
  2. 2Prepare and file Form 49B
  3. 3Track the acknowledgement to allotment
  4. 4TAN registered on TRACES and the income tax portal
  5. 5Deposit and return calendar set up

Packages

Frequently asked

Who needs a TAN?
Every person or entity required to deduct or collect tax at source — including proprietors paying salaries or contractor bills above the threshold. Individuals deducting TDS on property purchase under 194-IA are the main exception, as they use PAN.
What if we deduct TDS without a TAN?
The deposit cannot be made correctly and a penalty of ₹10,000 applies under Section 272BB, on top of interest for the delayed deposit.
Do we need a separate TAN for each branch?
Not necessarily. A single TAN can cover the whole entity, though large organisations often take branch-wise TANs where deductions and filings are handled locally.
