What this covers

Professional tax is a state levy on salaries and on carrying on a profession or trade. Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and several other states levy it; a few, including Delhi and Haryana, do not.

Employers need two things: a registration certificate (PTRC) for tax deducted from employees' salaries and an enrolment certificate (PTEC) for the entity's own liability. Rates, slabs and return frequency differ from state to state.

We register you in the relevant state, work the correct slab into payroll, and handle the periodic deposits and returns.

How we handle it

State-correct slabs

Each state has its own slab table and cap. We apply the right one instead of a generic ₹200 assumption.

PTRC and PTEC together

Employer and employee-deduction registrations are filed as a pair so you are not left half-registered.

Multi-state employers handled

If you have staff in more than one state, we register where required and keep the returns separate.

Deposits and returns on schedule

Monthly or annual, depending on the state and your liability — tracked on the same calendar as PF and ESI.

Documents you will need

Frequently asked

Which states levy professional tax?
Among others, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala. Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan currently do not.
What is the difference between PTEC and PTRC?
PTEC covers the entity's or the professional's own professional tax. PTRC covers the tax an employer deducts from employees' salaries and deposits with the state. Most employers need both.
How much is deducted from an employee?
It depends on the state's slab and the employee's monthly salary. Telangana and Karnataka, for example, cap it at ₹200 a month, so the annual maximum is ₹2,400 per employee.
Do we register in every state where we have employees?
Where a state levies professional tax and you have employees or a place of business there, yes. Remote employees working from a PT state are a grey area that depends on the state's rules — we will tell you where you actually stand.
